Toll-free messaging

RCS glossary

Toll-free messaging is business texting from a toll-free number, an 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 or 833 number, as an alternative to a registered 10-digit local number or a leased short code. Toll-free numbers are verified rather than registered through 10DLC, carry one nationwide identity, and are the natural fit for customer-service programmes that already advertise a toll-free line.

Verified, not registered

A toll-free number used for A2P traffic goes through toll-free verification: the business, its use case, sample messages and opt-in evidence are submitted to the toll-free messaging aggregator, and unverified toll-free traffic is blocked in the United States. The process is separate from The Campaign Registry and has its own timeline, so a programme that runs both local and toll-free numbers files both.

Toll-free, 10DLC or short code

Choose toll-free when the number is already the one customers know, when you want a single nationwide identity without a short code lease, or when messaging and calling should share a line. Choose 10DLC when a local presence matters or the number already exists in a local market. Choose a short code for very high volume. What is a short code and what is 10DLC cover the other two.

Toll-free and RCS

RCS is sent through a verified agent rather than from the number itself, so a toll-free number's role in an RCS programme is the SMS fallback and the two-way thread for phones without RCS. SimplyRCS supports toll-free alongside 10DLC and short codes, with the number types and rates on the pricing page.
